Mobilizing for a Research Revolution to Ensure LGBTIQ Inclusion in Asia:

logo

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) people make up three to ten percent of the world's population--but they are only partial citizens. Same-sex sexual acts are criminalized in 71 countries and many prohibit gender-nonconforming behaviors. Asia, home to 58% of the world's population and a driver of global development, lags in human rights protections for LGBTIQ people. LGBTIQ people have been attacked, arrested, tortured, raped, killed, sentenced to death and denied employment, education and healthcare; this is especially challenging in Asia because they are excluded from most human rights protections. The Government of Canada, a global leader in LGBTIQ inclusion and human rights, a signatory to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, is committed to advancing human rights protections for LGBTIQ people in Asia and globally.
